This painting is part of Underland, a series of drawings and paintings focused on what lies underneath our feet and within the earth. I imagine it as a rich and unseen world where rocks tell the story of the animals and plants that once lived there.
Through this window of the earth we can peek into life in a green valley where a stream runs through the landscape (and one sheep close to the bridge cannot seem to gain courage to cross it, so another one is talking her through it). In this valley sheep are guarded by loving donkeys, and there is plenty of wild grasses to feed everyone. Trees provide shelter to birds and shade in the summer months. Rolling hills are part of a delightful landscape where one can go into it though this window.
